Privacy Policy
Last Updated: October 2026 · Effective Date: October 2026
At GrayScale PDF (grayscalepdf.com), your privacy is our primary engineering requirement. Unlike legacy online PDF tools that upload your private documents to remote cloud servers, our tool runs 100% inside your web browser using modern client-side WebAssembly. Your documents never leave your computer, phone, or tablet.
1. Introduction
This Privacy Policy describes how GrayScale PDF ("we", "us", or "our") handles information when you visit or use our website at grayscalepdf.com. We believe you should not have to sacrifice document confidentiality to format, convert, or print your PDF files.
2. How File Processing Works (Client-Side Architecture)
When you select or drop a PDF into GrayScale PDF:
- Zero Remote Uploads: Your PDF file is loaded directly into your local browser's memory via standard HTML5 File APIs.
- Local Computation: All page rendering, grayscale color transformations, contrast adjustments, and compression algorithms execute locally using WebAssembly and HTML5 Canvas.
- No Network Transmission: The document contents, text, images, and metadata are never transmitted across the internet to our servers or any third-party infrastructure.
- Local Download: When you click download, your browser exports the generated PDF directly from local memory onto your device storage.
3. Information We Do NOT Collect
Because we do not use server-side document processing, we have zero access to:
- Your uploaded PDF files or any text, imagery, or personal data inside them.
- Document filenames, page counts, or file metadata.
- User accounts, passwords, or contact lists (no account creation is required).
- Payment or credit card information (our service is 100% free).
4. Minimal Website Analytics & Server Logs
Like virtually all websites, when you request a web page from our hosting servers, standard non-identifiable technical server logs may temporarily record:
This data is used solely for website reliability, security monitoring against automated DDoS attacks, and ensuring fast content delivery. It is never linked to individual documents or user identities.
- Your approximate geographic region (country or city level, derived from IP address).
- Browser type, operating system, and language preferences.
- Referring website and timestamp of the web page visit.
5. Cookies and Local Storage
No Tracking Cookies: GrayScale PDF does not use third-party advertising cookies or cross-site tracking pixels.
Browser LocalStorage: We use your browser's native localStorage solely to remember your Dark/Light mode theme preference. This data remains on your device and is never sent back to any server.
6. Regulatory Compliance (GDPR, CCPA, HIPAA)
Because we do not store, process, or transmit your documents on our servers:
- GDPR (Europe): No personal data processing of document contents occurs under Article 6 of the General Data Protection Regulation.
- CCPA / CPRA (California): We do not sell, rent, or share personal information with third parties for monetary or other considerations.
- HIPAA / Confidentiality: Healthcare providers, legal teams, and accountants can freely use GrayScale PDF without violating confidentiality regulations because documents never leave the local environment.
7. Changes to This Policy
We may occasionally update this Privacy Policy to reflect improvements in web browser technology or legal requirements. Any modifications will be posted directly to this page with an updated "Last Updated" date.
